Fazende: Sunday’s loss definitely a wakeup call

08:52 AM CST on Tuesday, October 31, 2006

So I guess he’s human after all. Saints coach Sean Payton, a man who seemingly could do no wrong since the moment he arrived, finally had a bad day; his team losing miserably to the Baltimore Ravens, 35-22.

It appeared the Saints got festive for Halloween and decided to disguise themselves as the Haslett-era teams of old, where personal fouls, false starts and turnovers were a regular occurrence.

Indeed, some of the ghosts of Saints’ pasts haunted this year’s squad on Sunday. The Ravens executed their game plan perfectly with big plays on defense and a ball controlling offense while the Saints looked completely out of sync.

Reggie Bush will have to learn patience to be effective in the NFL

Bush already looks like a seasoned veteran catching the ball out the backfield, but he still looks like a rookie when it comes to running the football at times. I was watching the Colts-Broncos game Sunday and saw a play where Peyton Manning pitched the ball to Joseph Addai, who jogged towards the sidelines, stretching the field and patiently waited for his blockers to set up then cut it up the field and gained about 12 yards for the first down. It was a good example of what Bush still needs to learn how to do. Bush is definitely quicker than Addai, but he needs to learn the right time to use that incredible burst. Right now, Bush is overrunning his blocks and not allowing the play to develop. When he learns patience, Bush will produce more big plays running the football.

A productive tight end would help the Saints’ red zone woes

The Ravens’ Todd Heap is one of best in the league at stretching the field up the middle and catching the ball in a crowd. It’s something that the Saints offense desperately needs. So far, tight ends have caught a combined 15 passes, less than 10% of Drew Brees’ completions. On Sunday, they had three trips to the red zone and got no points. That’s where an effective tight end would be most productive in this offense.

How fortunate are the Saints to have Marques Colston?

Colston has got to be a serious 'ROY' candidate.

The 252nd pick of this year’s draft had another stellar day Sunday, finishing with six receptions for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He leads the team with 577 receiving yards and six touchdowns grabs and is a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate. I can’t recall the last seventh round draft pick to have this much impact during his rookie season.

Turning the Negative into a Positive

I think this game will actually turn out to be a positive for the Saints. Any winning team must learn how to handle adversity. I think this is a good first measuring stick for Payton to see how his team reacts after a terrible loss. Coach Haslett’s teams did not handle adversity well. I’m anxious to see how the team responds from their worst performance of the year against the Buccaneers this Sunday.
