On Sept. 24, for the second time in three seasons, the Saints’ premiere running back tore an ACL. In 2005, it was his right knee. This time it was his left.

Why should he go on?

Day of days: Saints' Brees remembers grandfather's WWII experience

But Tuesday also likely meant a little bit more to Brees than any other Saints player.

Counterpoint: Spend the money, get Samuel
Another free agency period in the NFL is here so what should the Saints do with $30 million in cap room? Unlike my friend the Forecast, I say be aggressive and go after the big name. Rumors are swirling that the team and Asante Samuel could be close to making a deal.  If this is true, General Manager Mickey Loomis needs to pull the trigger and get him.

* Forecast: Instead of big name free agent, Saints should seek several mid level ones
Everyone knows what the Saints need to do: fix the defense. But where should they begin?

Kincaid: Saints have much work to do in offseason
No one word can ultimately describe the Saints’ season.  Sunday’s 33-25 loss to the Bears seemed like a mirror image of last season’s NFC Championship Game: costly turnovers and mistakes beat the Saints.

* 12/31/2007

Jim Henderson Commentary
As the ball was kicked off in Indianapolis on Sept. 6, I remember telling our radio listeners that "the most anticipated season in Saints' history is underway." As the final gun sounded in Chicago on Dec. 30, I remember thinking that "the most disappointing season in Saints' history is over."

Hester, mistakes burn Saints
CHICAGO -- Devin Hester raced past the New Orleans Saints and ended their bid for a return to the playoffs.

* 12/24/2007

Saints lose 3rd down battle against Eagles, but still alive
METAIRIE – Watching the film of New Orleans’ 38-23 Sunday loss to Philadelphia did little to change the mind of Saints head coach Sean Payton.

In fact, his view of the game moments after it concluded were nearly the exact same Monday afternoon – New Orleans (7-8) couldn’t figure out third-down, couldn’t get into the end zone and couldn’t beat a team that played particularly well.

12/23/2007

Playoffs? Saints not out of running yet
Believe it or not, the Saints playoff hopes aren’t gone and they will live into the season’s final week.

* Saints can't stop Eagles in 38-23 loss
New Orleans’ late-season playoff push all but ended Sunday in the Superdome with a 38-23 loss to Philadelphia, a team the Saints beat twice a year ago, including an NFC Divisional game at home.

* Goal line failure turned the tide
New Orleans’ season all but came down to three plays on offense and a defensive series that dragged on and on.

Notebook: Brees breaks Manning record; Injuries pile up
The injuries piled up for New Orleans in Sunday’s 38-23 loss to Philadelphia.

* 12/21/2007

Eagles' resurgent D leading the way
METAIRIE – Sure, Philadelphia might be 6-8 and out of the playoff chase in the NFC.

But don’t blame the defense. Only eight teams have allowed fewer points than the Eagles’ defense this year, and the unit brilliant inside the red zone.

* 12/19/2007

In a rhythm: Saints' Brees leading team in late season playoff push
METAIRIE – Drew Brees insists the quarterback who started the season for the Saints, the one who struggled to get on-target, isn’t the guy he looks at in the mirror every morning.

“Statistics from the first four games – I know it’s one touchdown and nine interceptions – it’s a little deceiving,” Brees said Wednesday. “I don’t feel like I was that bad. That’s certainly not me. I don’t how any of those interceptions happened, that’s not me.”

* 12/18/2007

Bush back by Sunday?
METAIRIE – Drew Brees might get a boost in the backfield this week when the Saints host Philadelphia in a crucial conference game with playoff implications.

Reggie Bush might be back, and with Aaron Stecker firmly in command of the featured back spot, New Orleans’ offense could once again present matchup problems for opponents.

* Saints could be in driver's seat, or out of playoffs by this weekend
The Saints could be out of the playoff race by the time this weekend is over, or they could be very much in the thick of the race, perhaps challenging for the top wild-card position in the NFC.

Forecast: Defense biggest impediment to Saints playoff hopes
I’ll just come right out and say it, “I have a sinking feeling it won’t be the Vikings that keep the Saints out of the playoffs. It will be their defense.”

* 12/16/2007

Stecker a force to reckon with
Even before the season, it was easy to realize how much Aaron Stecker meant to New Orleans.

* Kincaid: Stecker a dose of Deuce
Juan Kincaid has some thoughts on the Saints, especially Aaron Stecker's role and the irony of finishing the season against the Eagles and Bears.

Saints notebook: Harper coming on; Brees still positive
Roman Harper spent most of his first year on injured reserve with a torn ACL, so he didn’t have much of an opportunity to intercept a pass. Through 10 games in this, his second year, he still didn’t have interception.

* 12/14/2007

Stecker, Thomas give Saints backfield a boost
METAIRIE – A year ago, Aaron Stecker tallied four carries and 11 yards rushing. Pierre Thomas, meanwhile, was at Illinois, finishing up a career in which he ended with the sixth-most rushing yards in school history.

Now, these two backs are tasked with resuscitating New Orleans’ run game.

* 12/12/2007

Saints place Mare on IR, sign Gramatica
METAIRIE – The New Orleans Saints placed Olindo Mare on injured reserve Wednesday two days after the kicker hurt his hip in the team’s 34-14 win over Atlanta.

Head coach Sean Payton said the team signed Martin Gramatica to handle the Saints field goal, extra points and kick offs.

12/11/2007

Saints better with Bush
METAIRIE – Saints head coach Sean Payton said there was nothing new to report in regards to the status of Reggie Bush a day after the second-year back got a second opinion from noted Birmingham, Ala., orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. Several media outlets, including the Times-Picayune and the AP, reported that Bush’s season could be done after x-rays showed a torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament in his knee.

12/10/2007

Playoff scenarios
Playoff scenarios for week 15, as provided by the NFL:

* 12/09/2007

Saints' Payton will stay aggressive
METAIRIE – All New Orleans had to do was get a first down.

In the very least, it needed to hold onto the ball prior to punting it back to Tampa Bay, in theory with fewer than 3 minutes remaining and the Bucs holding no timeouts.

* 12/10/2007

Saints clinging to playoff hopes, but need another winning streak
ATLANTA -- The New Orleans Saints already rallied once this season. They'll have to do it again to get back to the playoffs.

* 12/08/2007

Watching the league: Saints in tune to Sunday's NFL schedule
METAIRIE – Jon Stinchcomb didn’t deny that he would likely watch Sunday’s NFL slate more closely than normal.

One thing he won’t do, though, is pull out the Algebra book and figure out mathematically what needs to happen for New Orleans to gain a leg up in the NFC Wild Card race.

* 12/04/2007

Henderson: Feedback on "The Play" commentary
Over the past few days I've received fan feedback regarding Monday's commentary regarding "The Play," which also included my appraisal on Reggie Bush's short career thus far. Most of the people who've responded felt it was something that needed to be said. I probably wasn't any tougher on Coach Sean Payton than most of the fans have been. I was just trying to explain why I believed "The Play" was a bad call, aside from the fact that it didn't work.

* 12/03/2007

Bush's second season a trying time
Reggie Bush was walking toward the tunnel leading to the Louisiana Superdome locker room while what was initially called a fumble by Saints kick returner Lance Moore was in the process of being overturned. There were 14 seconds left, and head coach Sean Payton had to run Bush down and angrily order him back to the bench.

* 12/02/2007

Late loss stings Saints
Reggie Bush sat at his locker, still in full uniform, nearly an hour after the final whistle blew in New Orleans’ home game against Tampa Bay.

* The Play worked all week in practice, say Saints
With fewer than four minutes remaining, and the Saints holding a 23-20 lead and momentum following Will Smith’s safety of Tampa Bay quarterback Luke McCown, Sean Payton did something he surely immediately regretted.

Notebook: McCown puts on a show; Colston nearly silenced
For much of the week, there was a question as to whether Jeff Garcia would start for Tampa Bay or not. A week ago, in a 19-13 win over Washington, Garcia injured his back.

Forecast: Payton repeats history with play call
Someone famous once said, “Those who ignore history are bound to repeat it.” Sunday, Sean Payton did exactly that.

* 11/28/2007

Member of Saints' practice squad remembers Sean Taylor
METAIRIE – One of Buck Ortega’s favorite memories of Sean Taylor comes from high school, when the two attended Gulliver Prep in Miami.

Ortega, almost a year and a half older than Taylor, needed a way to get to school. Enter Taylor.

* 11/25/2007

Brees leads Saints past Carolina
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Drew Brees playing one good half was more than enough for the New Orleans Saints against the rudderless Carolina Panthers.

11/26/2007

Saints find balance on offense
METAIRIE, La. -- Trying to win without Deuce McAllister was one thing. The New Orleans Saints still had Reggie Bush in the backfield, and he began handling more carries after McAllister's season-ending knee injury in Week 3.

Forecast: Saints win tells us almost nothing
If ever there was a game where a team could win 31-6 and nothing could be learned from watching said game, it was Sunday.

* 11/25/2007

Kincaid: Face it, Bush not a 'between the tackles' back
The Saints ran the ball more times (39) than they threw the ball (36) for the first time this year. I was astonished when I looked up that statistic.

* 11/21/2007

Believe it or not, Saints still alive
METAIRIE – New Orleans has lost two straight games and six of the first 10 it has played in this year.

The Saints are two games back in the division with six games to play.

And for that, New Orleans can count its blessings.

* 11/18/2007

Houston sets Saints season back, 23-10
Much-maligned end Mario Williams led a Houston defense that allowed no second half points, and Andre Johnson returned for 120 yards receiving and a touchdown to help the Texans to a 23-10 win over the error-prone New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

* 11/16/2007

Bush: 'It's about Houston vs. New Orleans'
METAIRIE – Reggie Bush was emphatic.

Sunday’s noon game against Houston is about his Saints and the Texans.

It’s not about Reggie Bush vs. Mario Williams.

* 11/15/2007

Saints' David still playing with confidence
METAIRIE – Jason David sat at his locker in the Saints training facility Wednesday, flanked by cameras and sound recorders.

Those asking questions weren’t there to ask about positives, though. Through it all, David remained and answered question after question about how he can still be confident and about what’s wrong with his game.

* Henderson: Can't compare Reggie, Mario Williams yet
As the Saints prepare for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, WWL-TV Sports Director Jim Henderson weighs in on the status of both teams' injured players, and what impact the Reggie Bush-Mario Williams talk will have on the game.

* 11/12/2007

Forecast: Saints secondary the primary problem
Imagine if the Saints were your dream woman. Perfect in almost everyway, in fact the only thing keeping you from marrying her is one little flaw: She’s a pyromaniac.

11/11/2007

Third down defense kills Saints
Marc Bulger lofted a short pass to tight end Randy McMichael, who turned and rumbled towards the 30-yard line and a first down. The officials spotted the ball short, but St. Louis coach Scott Linehan challenged the spot.

It turns out, the original placement of the ball was wrong. McMichael reached the 30 on third-and-6.

* Notebook: David says he wasn't picked on
Jason David doesn’t think St. Louis was going after him on Sunday in the Saints’ 37-29 loss to the Rams.
