Heat getting to some players at Saints camp

The second practice of training camp had several players griping about the humid conditions, but most said it was just the price that had to be paid.

“It’s worse than New Orleans,” said defensive tackle Brian Young. “There were a lot of guys griping and complaining and I’m one of them.”

The heat, which was set at about 85 degrees during practice, had offensive tackle Jammal Brown cramping up. He needed IVs following practice to get re-hydrated, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Young said that despite the heat, there was plenty of motivation for the team as no one wants to repeat last season’s three-win calamity.

“Last year sucked,” he said. “It’s something I never want to go through again. That’s the motivating factor.”

Young rated camp Payton as the toughest one he’s ever been through.

“Camp the last few years was a lot more laid back,” he said. “It was a lot more veteran-oriented and this year is a wake up call.”

Young said the laid back attitude may have been the cause of the bevy of mistakes the team made the last few seasons and he hopes that a more disciplined approach in practice will lead to less on the field problems during the season.”
