LSU head coach Les Miles called Chavis a tremendous coach. During his 14 years as Tennessee's defensive coordinator, the Volunteers ranked among the SEC's top four in total defense 10 times.

During that period Tennessee won at least nine games 11 times. The Volunteers won a school-record 13 games on their way to capturing the BCS National Championship in 1998. The team had 11 wins 1995, 1997 and 2001 and won 10 games in 1996, 2003, 2004 and 2007.
