LSU, track coach at odds on deal

BATON ROUGE -- LSU and Dennis Shaver are apparently at odds over a new contract.

Associated Press

Athletic Director Skip Bertman said Shaver signed a contract May 8 that replaces the coach's existing contract set to run through June 2009. The new deal, according to Bertman, would pay Shaver $165,000 in 2007-08, $175,000 in 2008-09 and $185,000 in 2009-10. Shaver's compensation would include endorsement packages, Bertman said.

Shaver's last contract paid him $140,000 for the 2006-07 season and was set to pay him $145,000 this year and $150,000 in 2008-09.

"After he signed it and agreed to it he didn't want to agree, I guess," Bertman said Thursday. "He wanted to reopen negotiations."

Shaver did not return calls Friday morning seeking comment.

Shaver became LSU's track and field coach in July 2004. He succeeded Pat Henry, who left for Texas A&M after leading LSU's track teams to a combined 26 NCAA championships.

Under Shaver, Henry's lead assistant for sprinters, LSU finished second in the NCAA women's indoor and outdoor championships this year and second in the NCAA men's outdoor championships.

The Lady Tigers won the SEC outdoor championships this year for the first time since 1996.
