For a little more than the past year and a half, Chad Shinn has overseen the process of coming up with a new logo and new uniforms for the New Orleans Hornets.

Morris Peterson, right, wears the Hornets' new home uniform while Julian Wright shows off the road version. The franchise unveiled new colors, uniforms and a new secondary logo Wednesday.

It just happens that it comes on the heels of the franchises most successful season ever.

Timing, as they say, is everything.

With new uniforms, new colors and a new floor – which will be unveiled Friday – it’s almost like the city is seeing the birth of a new team.

And after selling a franchise-record 10,000-plus season tickets while in New Orleans, Shinn, the Hornets Executive Officer, is giddy.

“I just couldn’t be more excited,” he said Wednesday following the unveiling of the new uniforms and logo.

Adding to the newness next season – the signing of forward James Posey, a veteran of two NBA championship teams during his career.

“JP is a great addition to this team,” said forward Morris Peterson, one of two players modeling the uniforms. “He’s a championship player. He brings a lot of intensity, a lot of intangibles.”

But the loss of guard Jannero Pargo to Russia could put the team in a thin position. Mike James is now the backup to Chris Paul at point guard, yet James had a hard time getting on the court a year ago.

Don’t expect things to stay that way.

“I won’t categorize any of the moves, but we’re interested in adding to our roster before we open up training camp,” General Manager Jeff Bower said.

The new-look Hornets add a little bit of the old and a little bit of the new to the uniforms. Home and away jerseys have pinstripes added. While the home uniform will remain white, the road becomes “vibrant blue.”

Both will have New Orleans written across the front, staying one of two NBA clubs with the home town emblazoned on the front.

The Hornets new secondary logo hits on New Orleans' music tradition.

As for the new logo, it takes advantage of every New Orleanians’ favorite abbreviation of the city – NOLA – and puts it on top of a trumpet. A basketball fills the hole in the O.

And, according to a Hornets press release, the words New Orleans Hornets in the main logo “includes more stylization linked to the wrought iron of New Orleans architecture.”

It’s just another step in rebuilding a franchise from the bottom up.

“All kinds of emotions and all kinds of enthusiasm can really be felt by everybody in the organization,” Bower said. “It really continues to build from the momentum the playoffs created last year.

“That’s how we looked at it as an organization – to build on connections and successes we had.”

Added Peterson, “It symbolizes a lot – (revitalization), that championship attitude. Whenever you’re trying to do something big, you change something.”

For the Hornets, it’s more than just a look.

“It’s pushing us that much closer to New Orleans,” Shinn said.
