Saints players to cut turf in reopening of Pan American Stadium

08:28 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Chad Bower / Eyewitness News

Two New Orleans Saints stars will help celebrate Tuesday the reopening of Pan American Stadium, which has been completely renovated and prepped for the football season.

Pan-American Stadium has been completely renovated and is ready for some gridiron action this Friday.

Drew Brees and Deuce McAllister will be in attendance. Rather than slicing a ribbon for the inauguration, the two will cut a strip of artificial turf 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The stadium was virtually destroyed during Hurricane Katrina, but after three years of efforts, Recovery School District schools will be able to call Pan American home. RSD schools will share the stadium and play their home games there after spending the past two years at Tad Gormley Stadium, which was a must costlier option for the city than Pan-American.

Over $2.2 million in improvements were done in the offseason, including several new additions: an artificial turf, bleachers, a scoreboard, a parking lot and a ticket booth. The locker rooms, restrooms and concession areas were also updated and are ready for use.

Those improvements were contributed through a collaborative effort of businesses and organizations. Of those, the New Orleans Saints, Coca-Cola, FEMA, the City of New Orleans and the two foundations established by McAllister and Brees, the Brees Dream Foundation & Deuce McAllister’s Catch-22 Foundation, were major contributors.

“A renovated Pan American Stadium is a key part of the park's master plan and we are happy and proud to deliver another athletic asset to the citizens of Greater New Orleans," said New Orleans CEO Bob Becker.

Carver, Cohen, John McDonogh and Clark high schools will hold a jamboree Friday, beginning at 6 p.m.
