PEARL RIVER, La. - One man was killed and another was transported to a hospital Saturday morning after they fell asleep on a train track north of Pearl River, according to St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
At approximately 8:20 a.m., the sheriff's office received a call from the conductor of a northbound Amtrak train reporting that the train struck two men who were lying across the tracks.
Deputies responded to the scene near the eight-mile marker on I-59 and found one man, born in 1989, dead at the scene. The other man, born in 1983, was airlifted to the hospital and his condition is unknown.
The men appeared to be hunting and camping based on signs at the scene but detectives could not figure out why the men had fallen asleep there, the sheriff's office said.
