NEW ORLEANS -- Police combed through Fisher Middle School in Lafitte Wednesday before ultimately determining the campus was clear of any danger.

Anonymous threats prompted lockdowns at Fisher and Marrero Academy, where Katie Arabie plans to send her daughter next year.

'It's kind of scary knowing that your child is here more at school than with you, so you wanna feel like your child is protected,' Arabie said.

Wednesday afternoon, Jefferson Parish deputies arrested 35-year-old Shane Kersey in connection with the incidents.

Authorities say Kersey admitted to calling in threats to Fisher Middle, Marrero Academy and also two schools in Plaquemines Parish.

While it appears the threats were nothing more than hoaxes, school officials say they can't take any chances.

'We treat it as a threat and then we evacuate the campus and then contact the sheriff's office. They work very quickly,' said JP Schools Superintendent Dr. James Meza.

Meza said it typically takes about 90 minutes to evacuate and then search each school.

Wednesday's threats came just hours after the Jefferson Parish School Board approved a new emergency plan for the district. The strategy calls for a single point of entry for all schools and a system of security cameras that will be synced up to the sheriff's office.

'In reality, the sheriff could look at buildings and classrooms from their command center,' Meza said.

Altogether, the plan for the district's 80 campuses will cost about $7 million to implement.

In the meantime, officials said procedures are already in place.

'The principal assumes total responsibility to assess -- what is the potential threat. At that time, they would notify the sheriff's office, and at the same time, notify my office,' Meza said. 'We want to assure the parents that every day we're concerned about safety in our schools, and that we're taking every precautionary measure to assure that every child has a safe and secure environment.'
