METAIRIE, La. -- The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has confirmed a body has been found in Metairie Friday morning.

According to JPSO around 8 a.m. a body was found in the water in a canal off of Independence Street in Metairie near I-10 Service Road.

Deputies located the body of a 24-year-old white male lying facedown in the drainage canal at the intersection.

When the body was removed from the water, it had no signs of trauma, therefore, an autopsy will be performed by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office, in order to determine the exact cause of death.

A witness told investigators he met the victim yesterday afternoon while sitting along the canal bank, and after drinking alcohol for quite some, the witness chose to leave the location around 8:30 p.m. According to the witness, while he was leaving, he saw the victim jump into the water to go swimming.

It wasn't until around 8 a.m. Friday morning, when the acquaintance went to visit the victim again, he discovered his body in the water, at which time he called 911.

Homicide investigators do not suspect foul play at this time, however, anyone with information in this matter is asked to contact the JPSOinvestigations bureau at (504) 364-5300.
