NEW ORLEANS - Two people were killed when the car in which they were riding struck a concrete column and burst into flames as it was exiting the interstate Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the I-610 East/Franklin Avenue off-ramp.

According to police, the driver of a black, 2004 GMC Yukon XL was traveling down the off-ramp when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the car and struck the column, catching fire with the driver and passenger still inside.

Police haven't released the names of the victims, but they said it was a 38-year-old man and a 36-year-old man.

Blood and alcohol tests are pending and the Orleans Parish coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
