NEWORLEANS -- Archie Jefferson was arrested Sunday on a traffic charge, after refusing to meet with New Orleans Police detectives investigating the death of his wife, police said.He has since been transferred to medical care, which police said is protocol when an arrested subject has a medical condition, as was the case with Jefferson.

NOPD spokesman Remi Braden saidpolice detectives had asked to meet with Archie Jefferson on Sunday, to ask him more questions about the murder of his wife, Sandra, who was found beaten in their Broadmoor home early Friday.

Jefferson refused to come in for questioning, Braden said. It was at that point that detectives found that Jefferson was wanted on a minor traffic attachment in Gretna. Detectives proceeded to arrest Jefferson on that charge, but were clear to point out that they have not pursued any charges against him in the death of his wife, she said.

While police were booking him on the traffic charge, they followed protocol, Braden said, which called for them to ask if he had any medical issues.

'He said he did, so detectives brought him to a nearby hospital, and transferred custody of him to medical attendants. This, too, is protocol under such circumstances when there is a medical issue involved and the only charge against the person arrested is a very minor charge like Mr.
Jefferson's traffic attachment,' Braden said in a news release.

'Our detectives will continue to meet with and interview Mr. Jefferson as often as necessary until all questions they have for him regarding his wife's death are answered.'

On Saturday, an autopsy showed that Sandra Peters Jefferson was killed by trauma to her head. Police are investigating her death as a homicide. On Friday, police towed away Archie Jefferson's truck from the couple's home, and said they questioned him and other people, as they investigated the case.

Jefferson is the brother of ex-Congressman William Jefferson who began serving a federal prison sentence in Beaumont, Texas last week.
