TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. For unknown reasons, a teenager's van drifted off the road Thursday, eventually leading to a crash that killed both him and his front seat passenger, according to the Louisiana State Police.

Around 7 p.m., Independence natives, Brandon Sance, 19, and Kassie Toups, 22, were driving on I-55, two miles south of the LA 442 exit.

The 1991 Dodge Caravan drifted off the road and entered the center grass median, police said.

It traveled for about 329 feet before impacting a guard rail directly underneath the LA 1064 overpass.

The impact overturned the van on its right side and it continued forward until striking the overpass support column with its roof, according to police.

Sance and Toups were pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries resulting from the crash.

Both were properly restrained and alcohol use is not suspected, police said.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver's attention away from the road.
