JEFFERSON, La. - An intoxicated driver caused a gas leak after slamming his car into a residence on River Road at Shrewsbury around 6 a.m. Wednesday, state police said.

Arnaldo Herrera Jr., 25, who was heading eastbound, ran off the road and crashed into a trailer, knocking it off of its foundation.

State police charged the driver with a DWI.

Thelma Lewis, who said she had rasied six children in the home, was currently living there with her son, Michael Lewis.

'It's all full of gas. We can't even go inside,' Thelma Lewis said.

Michael Lewis said he was awakened by the loud noise.

'It sounded like an explosion...knocked everything down inside,' he said.

State police, the fire department and a gas company were able to shut off the gas and reopen the road just before 8 a.m.

A few of Thelma Lewis' other children arrived on scene and were attempting to figure out the extent of the damage because the home is uninsured.

There were no injuries.

Harrera was charged with careless operation and DWI
