NEWORLEANS -- You have the chance to be a part of medical history here in New Orleans. The American Cancer Society is about to start a huge nationwide cancer prevention study.

Researcherswill follow 300,000 people for 20 years to learn how lifestyle behaviors and genetics help you prevent cancer.

People 30 to 65 years old who have never had cancer can join the free study. Theyneed 550 men and women to sign up from this area.

All you have to do is fill out a survey, give a small blood sample and have your waist measured. You will be asked to fill out surveys for the next 20 to 30 years.

'This one will certainly focus on obesity, the impact of obesity reduction. We know being obese increases your risk, but to have a huge study demonstrate losing weight and maintaining that loss in fact reduces your risk over time and many other factors,' saidDr. Terry Fontham, LSUHSC, Dean of the School of Public Health.

The sign up will be at several places in Orleans and Jefferson parishes in the middle of September. But you need to go now to the website to make an appointment or call 1-888-604-5888 toll free.
