NEWORLEANS - A 20-year-old suspect fired at officers on the Westbank midday Monday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Officers went to make a suspicious person stop around 11 a.m. in the 3000 block of Sandra Drive.

The suspect began running and turned and fired at the officers, police said. Police say officers did not return fire, and no one was injured.

While searching for the man, officers heard a gunshot and found that the suspect had shot himself in the face in the 100 block of WestPark Court, according to police. He was found in an abandoned apartment complex.

The suspect won't be identified until his family is notified. He has prior arrests for carnal knowledge of a juvenile, burglary, theft over $500 and under $100 and possession of stolen property.

None of the officers were injured in the incident.
