The Saints' journey to get below the expected 2013 salary cap of near $120 million began Friday when the team reportedly restricted the contract of linebacker Curtis Lofton.
ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas posted late in the afternoon that Lofton and the Saints agreed to redistribute $5 million from a roster bonus to a signing bonus. By doing so, the team was able to make the $5 million work more for them than again them for salary cap purposes.
Lofton's cap hit would have been $7.1 million. With the restructuring, it's expected to be down to $3.1 million because the bonus, according to Yasinskas, will now be pro-rated for the length of the contract.
