Two women were killed just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday after an impaired driver veered off the road nearly hitting an 18-wheeler head on and then striking a tree, according to Louisiana State Police.State Police say 36-year-old Jimmy Vizinat was driving a 2005 white Mercury Grand Marquis south on LA 24 about to enter the community of Grand Bois in Lafourche, when he crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler. The right front passenger reached across the vehicle and jerked the steering wheel to the right in order to avoid hitting the 18-wheeler head-on.Vizinat just missed the 18-wheeler but then veered off of the right side of the road and struck a tree on the passenger side of the Marquis.42-year-old Patricia Vega, the front seat passenger, and the right-side rear passenger, identified as 27-year-old Cari Scofield, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The rear passenger was ejected from the vehicle, said State Trooper Evan Harrell. The three other passengers were transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries, Eymard said.Vizinat was not injured in the crash. It is unclear who was wearing a seat belt, he said, noting the front seat passenger was wearing one.Vizinat was given an breath test and was found to be over the legal limit. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center and charged with 2 counts of Vehicular Homicide, 3 counts of Vehicular Negligent Injuring, Driving Left of Center, and No Driver's License. This crash remains under investigation by Louisiana State Police.
