NEW ORLEANS -- A former sergeant with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office pleaded guilty Wednesday to assaulting a detainee at a Gretna correctional center.
During a plea hearing, Gary Shine admitted that he struck an inmate with his knee while the inmate's hands were cuffed behind his back. He also admitted that he punched the inmate in the head.
Shine acknowledged that the inmate did not pose a threat and that there was no legal justification for hitting him.
He faces up to 10 years in jail.
