HOUMA, La. -- A Houma man gunned down an early morning visitor because the victim banged on a neighbor's door and woke him, police said.
It happened in the 8000 block of Big Cypress Street around 3 a.m.
Ray Carlos, 58, of Big Cypress Street yelled at the man who awoke him by banging on an across-the-street neighbor's door, police said. The victim started to approach Carlos and then Carlos fired a single shot that hit the victim in the head, killing him instantly, Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis said.
Police said they identified the victim as 29-year-old James Rube of Gray, La. The door he was banging was the site of his ex-girlfriend's house.
Carlos called 911, told authorities what happened and waited for them to arrive, Duplantis said. Arriving officers found Rube dead on the sidewalk.
Carlos is charged with second-degree murder and is in the Terrebonne Parish jail awaiting a bond hearing, the chief said. If convicted, he faces an automatic life sentence if convicted, police said.
