NEWORLEANS-- New Orleans firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire at a church in the Carrollton neighborhood, according to fire department officials.

It happened at the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church at 8:55 p.m. in the 8800 block of Hickory Street.

New Orleans Fire Department Superintendent TimMcConnell said his department dispatched about 61 firefighters in working the blaze.

They arrived on the scene to find the chruch was locked and unoccupied. Most of the fire was contained to the attic.

'They did a fantastic job of keeping it contained to that initial area. Although it did break through the roof, they kept it contained to that attic space,'McConnell said. 'Hopefully it won't put this church out of use for too long.'

As with any church fire, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was on the scene to investigate, but McConnell said they don't suspect any foul play.

'We have no reason to believe anything like that in this case. It was locked up tight. It was in an area of the attic that had some mechanical equipment, so we're leaning toward that, but it will be a little while before we have our investigation done.'

One neighbor was taken to the hospital, but McConnell said it wasn't related to the fire. She was not in the building.
