NEWORLEANS-- City and state leaders, along New Orleans Saints officials and players, gathered outside of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the unveiling of a statue to honor team owner Tom Benson.
Flanked by family members and friends, Benson was on hand with Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Gov. Bobby Jindal for the unveiling.
The statue shows the team owner hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy over his head, as he did when the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2009.
Several on hand praised Tom Benson for having kept both the Saints and the NBA's Pelicans in New Orleans, a smaller market that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Benson has owned the Saints since the mid-80s and the franchise has had a large amount of success, making its only playoff appearances and winning a Super Bowl under his leadership.
