NEWORLEANS - At 3:22 a.m., police arrived on the 300 block of N. Peters Street in the French Quarter to find a 26-year-old man fatally shot multiple times on the sidewalk.

Responding officers had been working a nearby paid detail when they heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene.

Upon arriving, witnesses gave a description of the suspect and the vehicle, according to police.

Minutes later, police spotted the vehicle, and after a brief car chase, Jamal Claude, 27, abandoned his car in the 2500 block of Dumaine Street.

'The suspect jumped out of the vehicle, ran though some backyards and the first district was actually able to apprehend him [in the 800 block of North Dorgenois Street,]' said NOPDSgt. Nick Gernon.

The victim was identified as Jaunet Ross.

After being captured, police questioned Claude and he was arrested and booked with second degree murder.

Eyewitnesses reported, and the NOPDconfirmed, seeing a fight between Claude and the victim around a nightclub on Decatur Street near Bienville. The fight turned into a chase and gun shots followed, eyewitnesses said.

'There's a fight that break out in the club and everybody just ran and they separated. That was it. I didn't think it would come up to this...I heard the shots when I came out,' said Rickey Wilson, who had been working as an audio engineer at a Decatur Street nightclub at the time of the incident.

At least five bullet casings were found.

Claude has previously been arrested for aggravated battery, battery, possession of marijuana, flight from a police officer, resisting a police officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, domestic violence, alter or removal of VIN from a motor vehicle, trespassing, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and warrants.
