NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police have arrested a man in the Wednesday morning murder of a 35-year-old woman in Algiers.

Police charged Gary Burnett, 27, with the second-degree murder of Shonray Lee, 35, who was shot and killed in 2000 block of Hendee Street.

NOPD spokeswoman Remi Braden said Burnett and Lee had a 'tumultuous' relationship.

Braden said people reported hearing a 'boom,' followed by the sound of someone falling down stars. They also reported hearing children yell out, 'Help my mama!'

Burnett had been charged previously with criminal trespass, illegal carrying of weapons, possession of narcotics (numerous charges), resisting an officer and possession of cocaine.
