ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. A Slidell woman who went missing while on a kayak trip on the Pearl River has been found and is safe, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

Officials said that Sandra Pierce, 51, got turned around and lost in the woods and wandered around during the night.

EMT's were checking her condition.

Around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sandra Pierce, her husband and another man launched from Crawford's Landing on two separate boats.

Pierce, 51, was in a 14' long, two-man, bright orange ocean kayak and the men shared another boat, the sheriff's office said.

The parties were scheduled to meet at a rendezvous point shortly after.

Around 4:30 p.m., after waiting for several hours at the specified location, her husband called 911, according to the STPSO.

The sheriff's office, along with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the United States Coast Guard, searched the area until midnight and resumed the search at 6 a.m. Friday. They used an infrared radar equipped helicopter.
