NEW ORLEANS -- A Gretna woman was sentenced in federal court and ordered to pay back over $133,000 to the Social Security Administration for collecting her mother's social security checks for nearly 13 years after the mother had died, according to U.S. Attorney's Office.

Shirley Bunda, 76, was sentenced to three years probation for theft of government funds and ordered to pay restitution of $133,297. Bunda has already paid $40,000 back to Social Security, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Bunda and her mother shared a checking account, but Bunda didn't tell Social Security of her mother's death on Feb. 15, 1998 and kept taking the checks until Aug. 3, 2011, totaling $173,297, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
