NEW ORLEANS A 40-year-old man who allegedly robbed employees at a public library in New Orleans East shot and killed himself while being chased by police, according to NOPD spokesman Officer Frank Robertson.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. in the 5600 block of Read Boulevard.

Robertson said the suspect fled the scene with 'numerous money bags' inside his backpack. They were able to track him down to an alley in the 10000 block of Seawood Drive and called the K9 unit to apprehend him.

At this point, according to Robertson, officers heard a single gunshot.

They found the suspect bleeding from the head with 'an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound,' Robertson said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The man hasn't been identified.

This case is being investigated by the Public Integrity Bureau as well as the Office of New Orleans Independent Police Monitor.
