ST. TAMMANYPARISH, La. -- An Alton man is in a New Orleans hospital after getting shot in a gunfight with St. TammanyParishSheriff's Office deputies on Christmas night, according to Capt. George Bonnett, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

Around 11 p.m., the sheriff's office received a 911 call from a woman who told police that she was with her family and that they were locked inside a house as her son-in-law was trying to break into the home, according to the sheriff's office. The woman told police that the man, later identified as Antoine Tobias, 40, was armed and acting extremely violent.

'The incident began moments earlier at the Tobiases' house next door. Tobias' wife, fearful of his erratic and dangerous behavior, left the home with her two kids and fled to her parents' home next door,' said a statement from Bonnett.

By the time deputies arrived at the home on North 10th Street, Tobias had broken into the home and was inside with his wife, two children, mother-in-law and step father-in-law. He was still armed, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities surrounded the home, and 'a deputy near a bathroom window made contact with the family, who had locked themselves in that room. The deputy helped all family members exit through the bathroom window and led them to safety,' said Bonnett.

After the family had escaped, Tobias came through the same window armed with the handgun. 'Once outside the house, Tobias fired multiple rounds at deputies. The deputies returned fire, striking Tobias multiple times. Tobias was also bitten by a K-9 dog during the incident,' said Bonnett.

Tobias was treated on the scene and taken to University Hospital. His condition is unknown, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening, according to the sheriff's office.

When he is released from the hospital, Tobias will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on one count of aggravated burglary and two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.
