SLIDELL, La. -- City of Slidell employees will have to start paying half of their employee retirement contributions starting in July.
The council voted last night to make the change.
For years, the city has paid the employees' portion of their retirement funds, on top of the city's portion.
The change comes as the city faces financial troubles due to low sales taxes.
In 2014, the employees will start putting up 100 percent of their portion of retirement payments.
City leaders say if the budget situation improves, the issue can be reconsidered.
