WWL-TV and its parent company, Belo Corp., are among the winners of the 2013 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism, announced Wednesday.

The awards are presented by the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

The 2013 Cronkite Awards, named for the legendary CBSNews anchor,recognize distinguished work produced during the 2011-2012 election cycle.

'Shining a spotlight on this kind of commitment is a core mission of the Cronkite Award. The leadership...asked their stations to dedicate themselves to this mission, and the stations rose to the challenge,' read the Cronkite award citation.

At WWL-TV, this included multiple local election stories and on-air coverage and analysis, as well as 'It's Your Time' segments broadcast on air and on WWLTV.com.In those segments, qualified candidates for congressional office were offered 5 minutes of free air time to speak directly to voters.

Belo's cable station in Seattle, Northwest Cable News, was also honored with an award for its innovative production techniques and analysis, including social media strategies for political coverage.

Among the other national winners were CNN reporter/anchor Tom Foreman (formerly of WWL-TV); ABC News anchors Jonathan Karl and Martha Raddatz; BET and Univision networks; and local stations in Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio.

The awards will be presented at the National Press Club, Washington, D.C., on April 19.
