TANGIPAHOA, La. -- The Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney's Office has recused itself from prosecuting Kentwood Police Department Chief Greg Newton, turning over the case to the attorney general.

Louisiana State Police started investigating Newton in December about missing evidence.

He was arrested a month later after troopers discovered that $2,000 was unaccounted in the case of a residential burglary.

Newton had been in charge of that case.
