KENNER, La. -- A Canadian National train derailed in Kenner on Monday, but officials say there were no injuries or hazardous material spilled.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. in the Centanni, Salvador, Morey and Farm roads area in south Kenner.

The train was carrying coal, and no hazardous materials were on board.It was headed from southern Illinois to Convent, Louisiana.

Two of the cars were derailed on their sides and two are leaning, while the rest are derailed upright, said Patrick Waldron, a Canadian National spokesman.

Officials are asking the public to avoid the area. Streets were blocked at Farm and Kenner Avenue, and Coleman and Kenner Avenue.

Canadian National crews are investigating the incident and have begun the process of cleaning up the derailment.

Mayor Mike Yenni is also reportedly on the scene
