NEWORLEANS-- Jazz and Heritage Festival officials opened at noon today as crews worked on the wet, saturated and muddy grounds.
Even without it raining as the festival opened, days of heavy rains inundated the festival grounds leaving the area saturated and soggy.
'Music will begin at noon today at Jazz Fest. Early performance times will be adjusted, & the fest will be back on schedule at approx 1 pm,' said a tweet from the Jazz Fest Twitter account.
Instead of sun dresses and shorts, festival goers were wearing storm gear -- raincoats, ponchos, umbrellas and rubber boots -- when the early birds arrived at the festival.
'It's been 30-plus years,' said Kitty Foley, who was one of the early birds, 'and the rain isn't going to keep us away.'
On Thursday, crews tried dumping sand to help with the mud and water in parts of the Fair Grounds, but hours of rain left the ground soaked and muddy again in most places.
