NEW ORLEANS -- The device found from by police near the WWII Museum was 'determined to be an old weathered commercial type pyrotechnic device,' the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement.

NOPD shut down the area around Calliope and Magazine streets after the suspicious device was found 'on the side of the WWII Museum' Wednesday night.

The device is similar to a bottle rocket, said police, appearing to have been ignited but not exploded. Officials are not sure where the device came from, although police believe that it may have fallen from a garbage truck or come someone discarding trash.
