NEWORLEANS - On Wednesday, Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined other city officials and developers to celebrate a new chapter for the stretch of North Carrollton Avenue from Bienville to St. Louis.

The once blighted area is the home of a project that is creating 500 new jobs and bringing many new retailers to the Mid-City neighborhood.

Many of the businesses in the more than 100,000 square foot shopping center have already opened, including:

  • Winn-Dixie
  • Office Depot
  • Jefferson Feed
  • Panera Bread
  • Pizza Hut
  • LA Nails Spa

There are nearly just as many still to come:

  • Verizon Wireless
  • Felipe's Taqueria
  • Five Guys Burgers and Fries
  • Pei Wei Asian Diner
  • Ochser Urgent Care Clinic
  • Pinkberry
  • GNC

While the new additions are great for Mid-City, Landrieu said all of these new businesses will serve a larger purpose for the city as a whole.

He explained the project is meant to 'really kind of set a stone in place, a foundation, that basically epitomizes what we have all been talking about as citizens. That we are going to build it back better than before.'

'So where are the tax dollars going to be spent now? Right here in New Orleans, right here in Mid-City. Whether we want to buy something to eat...or to shop, we can do it here, and it is so exciting to have this day come,' said City Council Member Susan Guidry, who represents District A.

'I will be back again,' said one shopper who is already enjoying the new stores.

Officials said all of the stores should be open by the end of August.
