The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Justice Department has subpoenaed Black Elk Energy for documents related to the explosion that killed three oil platform workers off Plaquemines Parish last year.

Eyewitness News broke the story this spring that a grand jury was investigating the incident for possible criminal negligence.

A federal marine board investigation has already blamed Black Elk and its contractors for causing the accident, and now prosecutors want to see material from Black Elk's own probe, which blamed Galliano contractor Grand Isle Shipyards for using an unauthorized subcontractor and failing to follow safety rules.

The subcontractor's alleged misdeeds have been chronicled in an EyewitnessNews special series, Pipeline to the Platform. And just this week in an Eyewitness Investigation, the station reported on how regulators are struggling to control smaller oil companies and their contractors.
