NEWORLEANS-- The NFL has fined San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks $15,750 for his vicious hit Sunday against Saints Quarterback Drew Brees, according to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.
The 49ers were penalized 15 yards for Brooks' hit on Brees, which left the quarterback with a bloody mouth. The penalty negated a turnover and kept a Saints drive alive and led to a game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter.
Ray Lewis, an ESPN Monday Night Football analyst, said before the broadcast of the Patriots-Panthers game he would pay Brooks' fine should he receive one.
Brooks hasn't said whether he will appeal the fine, but was furiious with the call after 49ers lost the game, telling the San Francisco Chronicle 'I didn't hit him with my hand or my helmet. I basically bear-hugged him. That's just how football is played. I think this s is bull -. Football, the way they call stuff these days, it's watered down. It ain't real no more.'
While Brees said he didn't feel the hit was 'malicious' or 'intentional,' he did believe that it warranted a flag from the referees. 'It felt like I got my head ripped off,' he said after the game. 'And I get up and I've got a mouth full of blood. So there was no doubt in my mind that, 'Hey, it's gonna be a penalty.' '
