Tuesday is Earth Day. And that's the topic of this week's Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

NEW ORLEANS -- The rest of world is honoring Earth Day today, but we here in Louisiana sit at Ground Zero. All the ills that Earth Day was created to address pollution of the air, water and land, rising sea levels, coastal erosion and more we live with all of that every day here in Louisiana.

What are our elected leaders doing about these problems?

Sadly, not much. In the state capitol, the oil and gas industry continues to flex its political muscle to snuff out any attempt to hold the industry accountable for its environmental sins. The industry even runs advertisements blaming trial lawyers for filing environmental lawsuits.

In federal court, BP continues to try to undo a settlement it negotiated and signed. BP even claims it has finished cleaning up Louisiana's coast after the biggest oil spill in history.

Let's be clear: lawyers and settlements aren't the problem; coastal erosion and dodging environmental responsibility are the problem.

Maybe some day our elected leaders will practice what they preach about responsibility and accountability. Until then, Louisiana will remain ground zero for the world's environmental problems.
