METAIRIE, La. -- Chris Treadaway takes a stroll down Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie and can't help but notice the piping from the canal sticking out of the ground.

'I wouldn't mind seeing more trees around here,' he said.

He said the area could use some sprucing up since this is the busiest intersection in the area.

'It is better to have trees than a ditch over there,' Chris Treadaway said. 'It is so much nicer, especially in the summer. It is just so hot here.'

Right now plans are underway to give parts of Metairie a fresh, new look.

In a rendering of the plans, there would be plenty of green space and even fountains similar to the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Businessman Lee Giorgio told our partners at The New Orleans Advocate that he wanted to turn a rather drab canal into something with a bit of a Vegas inspiration.

Others in this area say they agree something needs to change.

'I think it would look good,' Carrie Rapnei said. 'I would like to see, maybe, some flowers.'

The $250,00 project will be paid for by donations and Jefferson Parish beautification funds.

The story was developed with our partners at The New Orleans Advocate.
