The fight over the Common Core education standards continues in the state courts. But the public relations fight continues outside the courthouse. That's the topic of this week's Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

There's a lot of room for debate about Common Core, but cheap shots should have no place in that debate.

That's why it's so disappointing, even to conservatives, that Gov. Bobby Jindal and his top aides continue to smear state Education Superintendent John White and most members of the state education board as crooks.

The truth is, Jindal supported bringing Common Core to Louisiana, and he signed the agreement that made Common Core Louisiana's official education policy. Most of all, the Jindal administration specifically approved the Common Core contracts that the governor now claims are illegal.

For the governor now to suggest, over and over, that White and education board members broke the law to implement Common Core is disingenuous.

In two separate lawsuits, courts have ruled in favor of Common Core. One judge noted that the governor's lawyer literally produced no evidence of any wrongdoing.

The governor has every right to change his mind about Common Core. But he has no right to put Louisiana's children at risk to pursue his far-fetched presidential ambitions. He owes everyone concerned, especially White, an apology.
