NEW ORLEANS The NOPD has arrested a fifth person in connection with a Burgundy Street shooting that left two people dead and five others, including two young children, wounded. The shooting occurred on August 10, 2014.
The NOPD Violent Offenders Warrant Squad, along with U.S. Marshals and the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office arrested 34-year-old Michael Finnie on two counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Police said they believe Finnie was the driver of the vehicle used in the shooting and getaway.
'The arrests we are making in this case are a direct result of strong police work and a successful partnership with the community,' said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison. 'We will continue to follow all leads in this investigation until everyone involved in this incident is brought to justice.'
On August 18, police arrested 23-year-old Joseph Nelson, III and 25-year-old Ashley Shorts. Nelson is charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and five counts of Attempted First Degree Murder. The NOPD believes Nelson was one of two shooters in this incident. Shorts is charged with conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice. The NOPD believes Shorts assisted one of the shooters involved to help them avoid detection and prosecution.
On August 14, police arrested 20-year-old Blair Taylor and 25-year-old Jeffery Rivers. Taylor is charged with two counts of First Degree Murder and five counts of Attempted First Degree Murder. The NOPD believes that Taylor was the other shooter in this incident. Rivers is charged with two counts of Principal to First Degree Murder and five counts of Principal to Attempted First Degree Murder. The NOPD believes Rivers provided the weapon and the vehicle that Taylor used in this incident.
