We have a little more than a week left before final cut down but that doesn't mean that I haven't made cuts of my own in my head. And yes, this not final.
It's my weekly preseason way, way too early 53-man roster, version 2.
We're beginning to see a trend develop as far as who has been playing and who is getting pity time.
What's clouding judgment is the injury factor. What do you do with a guy like Tom Johnson, who hasn't seen the field since injuring his left calf against the 49ers? What about Clint Ingram, who would have a legitimate shot except that he can't keep his hamstring healthy?
Changes this week:
Putting Jed Collins in as a fullback. But I'm keeping Korey Hall. There's room for both players and both players have been utilized throughout the preseason, with Collins owning the first-team role and Hall earning a spot with special teams.
On the offensive line, obviously Jon Stinchcomb is no longer around. The question is, does that open up a spot for someone else? There would be room for Jordan Black, who could be an experienced backup at tackle. Or there could be room for Brian de la Puente, who gives you a guard-center combo, but could easily be a practice squad guy.
I still don't know what to do with Junior Galette (much to the dismay of Who Dat Nation and Times-Picayune beat writer Mike Triplett). We know the coaching staff likes his athleticism. It comes down to him and Jeff Charleston in my eyes and this week, I go with Galette over Charleston because he gives them something in special teams and in pass rush.
Will Smith's possible suspension also is throwing me for a loop because it opens up a spot. And it looks like he will be suspended for at least two games if you read what the Vikings are planning with Kevin Williams, who also was busted for StarCaps.
If Smith does get suspended, I'll keep Mitch King on the roster along with Tom Johnson. King has been seeing time with the first-team with Tom Johnson out and with Aubrayo Franklin being a week-to-week diagnosis with his MCL.
I still have defensive end Greg Romeus going on IR and running back Chris Ivory starting the season on PUP.
