NEWORLEANS - If you have to be in the intensive care unit, you can now have an extra set of expert eyes watching over you.

As Medical Watch reporter Meg Farris first showed you last summer, there is a new program that started Monday at Ochsner.

It's called E-ICU where highly trained critical care specialists can watch and monitor Ochsner ICU patients at the Kenner, Baton Rouge and Baptist Uptown campuses from an off-site medical bunker.

Studies show critically ill patients do better when taken care of by specialists. The problem is nationwide there aren't enough of those doctors and nurses. This will also help sick people leave the hospital sooner with fewer complications.
