NEWORLEANS- Two city council members walked out of a meeting after a proposal to amend the city charter to change the way the city elects its two council-at-large members failed.

The ordinance had proposed that people seeking the at-large seats would run on two separate ballots rather than as part of a single field of candidates.

Council members Cynthia Hedge-Morrell and Jon Johnson abruptly left the meeting after the vote.

Johnson had argued that the current setup allows council at-large candidates to win a seat with just over 25 percent of the vote.
