NEWORLEANS- Deputies apprehended an escaped Orleans Parish prisoner Tuesday afternoon, about 36 hours after he escaped from the parish prison temporary housing center.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman said deputies found Juan Vasquez, 25, in an abandoned apartment complex in New Orleans East. He said they chased Vazquez inside and captured him in an empty second floor unit.

Gusman said Vazquez had been living in the rafter's of the abandoned Versailles Arms apartment complex.

'The Special Operations Division of the Sheriff's Office was aggressive in this investigation and search,' said Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman. 'The concerted effort led by OPSO deputies resulted in the apprehension of the inmate within 36 hours.'

Vazquez was rebooked into Sheriff's Office custody on a charge of simple escape and is now housed in Orleans Parish Prison.

Vazquez escaped Monday morning when he cut through a tent and scaled a razor-wire fence to get out.
