NEW ORLEANS Two men suspected of stealing baby alligators from the Audubon Zoo were taken into custody Wednesday, according to the NOPD.

Police said officers chased a man they said was pulling on car door handles in the 900 block of Poey Farre Street Wednesday night around 9:45 p.m.

Officers said that when they approached the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rodney L. Thornton, he took off. One officer said he saw a weapon drop from Thornton's shirt.

He was arrested and upon looking up Thornton's record, they found that he was identified as one of two men who was suspected of dropping off a container of live baby alligators on July 5.

The other suspect, 20-year-old Kawayne Powell, turned himself in at a police station Wednesday around 10 a.m.

Thornton was booked with illegal possession of the alligators, possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, tampering and resisting a police officer.

Powell was booked with possession of stolen property.
