NEW ORLEANS A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 left an 8-year-old boy dead and four other passengers in critical condition, forcing police to shut down the interstate in New Orleans East for several hours Saturday night.

The incident happened on I-10 westbound at the Morrison Road exit just before 11 p.m. The roadway was closed until shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday.

The 8-year-old boy, Adrian Antoine III, was a passenger in the vehicle involved, a GMC sport-utility vehicle, according to Officer Frank Robertson, a police spokesman.

The 27-year-old male driver of the SUV struck the curb of the roadway for an unknown reason, Robertson said, causing him to lose control and the vehicle to flip over several times.

The driver and the 8-year-old boy were both ejected from the vehicle. The child died on the scene. The driver and three other passengers were taken to the hospital.

The accident is under investigation.
