LAPLACE, La.-- A little more than 24 hours after losing two of his deputies, St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre said the two surviving deputies from Thursday's shooting were improving.

'I have two very good surviving officers and we need to take care of them and their families,' he said. 'And we also need to take care of our officers that were killed in the line of duty and their families.'

The sheriff said he visited the families of both of the deputies killed - Brandon Nielsen and Jeremy Triche - and then went to the two hospitals now caring for the injured deputies. At River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace, he spoke to Officer Jason Triche.

'He couldn't really speak, but he could write and I think today, they took him off the ventilator, so he's recovering very, very well,' Sheriff Tregre said. 'We're very thankful for that.'

Sheriff Tregre said he then traveled to the LSU Interim Hospital in New Orleans, where Officer Michael Scott Boyington is recovering. He said Boyington's sense of humor was firmly intact.

'He's doing very well also and he just wanted me to tell everyone that he'll be back to work Monday,' Sheriff Tregre said with a smile.

It has been a wrenching day and a half, for the officers that served with the deputies and the larger law enforcement community as a whole.

'What an emotional toll this has taken on this community and this parish,' said Col. Mike Edmonson with the Louisiana State Police. 'It makes me and my guys and the ones assigned to this investigation, work that much harder and make sure that we bring justice to these individuals.'

Funeral arrangements were announced on Friday for Deputy Jeremy Triche. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 19, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at New Wine Christian Fellowship on West Airline Highway in LaPlace. Visitation continues on Monday, August 20, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It will be followed by a mass at 11 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in LaPlace.
