NEW ORLEANS -- Big changes are coming to the disaster food stamp program for those still trying to get disaster food stamps in Orleans and Jefferson parishes.

The state previously announced that sites in those parishes would remain open through Thursday. Now they are extending the hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., but they're also bringing back the letter system.

The schedule for UNO and the Alario Center is last names A-M on Wednesday and N-Z on Thursday.

Also, food stamp centers in Lafourche will now stay open through Thursday at the south Lafourche Parish Library in Cut Off only.

The new deadline for residents in Plaquemines and St. John the Baptist Parish is now Friday.

To see if you qualify, you can speed up the process by calling 1-888-524-3578. Or you can find out how to preapply and whether you qualify here.
