NEWORLEANS - Early Friday morning, a fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the I-10 westbound near the Canal Street exit.
Around 4 a.m., the 29-year-old driver was leaving the French Quarter on his motorcycle, along with a group of riders, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
The motorcyclist hit the left guard rail just before the South Claiborne fly over, flew off the side of the interstate and fell 38 feet, police said.
'According to witnesses that were traveling with the cyclist, they said for reasons unknown he was in the far left lane, struck the guard rail, then he went over and landed ground level and landed on Claiborne Avenue,' said Officer Frank Robertson.
His bike remained on the I-10, police said, until police moved it around 6 a.m.
The coroner's office was below the I-10, near Claiborne and Perdido, where the body was found. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Blood and alcohol tests are pending. The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
All lanes on the I-10 were reopened by 6:10 a.m.
